Meet of Champions Results

The Meet of Champions was this past Saturday and South was well represented.  Highlighting the meet for South was Elly Wardle (’12) who received the bronze medal in the high jump.

Wardle jumped 5’4″ and her 3rd place finish was one of the highest ever in the high jump at the Meet of Champions for a South athlete.  A great way to finish her indoor State Championship career.

In the 1600 meter final, Molly Applegate (’13) had another great 1600 meter performance.  Her time of 5:10 got her 13th place overall.  Only a Junior, Molly now has the 1st and 2nd fastest indoor times in South history for the 1600 meters.

In the shot put, Kimberly Alfaro was three spots better than what she was seeded coming into the Meet of Champions.  Her throw of 35’9″ placed her 13th overall.

For the boys team, Chris Marco (’13) was the lone individual representing South at the Meet of Champions.  It has been almost 10 years now since South has had a distance runner that has been as successful as Marco has been this indoor season.  His name is now all over the individual and relay record lists for South.

Some would consider Marco’s 16th place performance in the mile on Saturday a disappointment.  But Marco took on the heavy burden of carrying this team on his back all year.  His time of 4:24 is slower than what he ran last week but if you take a look back on the mile winners at the Meet of Championships, a 4:24 mile would win or medal most years.  Michael Benson (’80) victory at the 1980 All-Group Meet in the 1500meters (4:04) would convert to about the time Marco ran Saturday.  Chris Greer (’95) won the 1600 meters at the Meet of Champions in 1995 with a time of 4:26.  This just shows you how competitive high school distance running has become lately.  Big breakthroughs are coming for Marco and lets remember….he is only a junior.
