January Track and Field Race Updates


There have been quite a few meets that have taken place in our two week absence of updates.  First was the Ocean County Championships on Thursday, January 17th.  South’s boys and girls team both finished fourth overall.  On the boy’s side, gold medals were awarded to:  Chris Marco (’13) in the 800 meter dash in a time of 1:57.21, just narrowly missing Don Grow’s school record of 1:57.0 in yards;  Kyle Kroon (’14) in the 1600 meter run in a time of 4:23.73, moving to 6th All-time on the mile list and passing Henry Menke (’76) as the Junior Class record holder; the 4 x 400 meter relay team in a time of 3:37.85.

Other scorers included:

Alex Roby (’13) – tied for 4th in the pole vault with a jump of 10’6”

Sean Conway (’13) – 5th place in the shot put with a toss of 45’4.25”

On the girl’s side, a gold medal was awarded to Molly Applegate (’13) in the 1600 meter run in a time of 5:16.55.

Other scorers included:

Destiny Kearney – 4th place in the 55 meter dash in a time of 7.64

Brianna Piazza – 5th place in the 55 meter dash in a time of 7.65

Alyssa Wamsley – 2nd place in the 400 meter dash in a time of 1:00.81

Molly Applegate – 5th place in the 800 meter dash in a time of 2:24.38

4 X 400 Meter Relay team – 3rd place in a time of 4:16.26

The next meet was the Frosh/Novice Mid Winter Classic held by our alumni group that donates all the money made at the meet to the Mark O’Leary and Ed Heffernan Scholarship.

Next up was the Shore Conference Championships on Friday, January 25th at the Bubble in Toms River.  South held out most of its varsity guys but did get a huge shot put throw of 48’0.50” from Sean Conway (’13) which puts him in the top 20 throws in South indoor history.

On the girls’ side, South scored in two events:

Destiny Kearney – 6th place in the 55 meter dash in a time of 7.65

Chelsea Smith – 2nd place in the 1600 meter run in a time of 5:11.28

The next day, both teams sent a few athletes to compete at the New Balance Games at the Armory in New York City.  In the Girls Invitational 1 Mile Race, Molly Applegate finished 8th out of 15 competitors in a time of 5:08.92.  The 4 X 200 meter relay team smashed the school record set last year running 1:49.13.  And the girls 4 x 800 meter relay team finished 18th out of 82 teams in a time of 9:55.  The boy’s team sent up two 4 X 800 meter relay teams.  They finished 8th and 82nd out of 117 teams.  The “A” team ran 8:07.62 which lands them 8th All-time on our school list (splits:  Brett Michelini 2:04.68; Kyle Kroon 158.30; Pete Buonocore 2:09.94; Chris Marco 1:54.36).
